Second Sunday in Lent Devotion

Second Sunday in Lent – February 28, 2021

‘By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.’ (Psalm 42:8).

LSB 430 – My Song Is Love Unknown

(Verse 1 of this week’s hymn served as inspiration for today’s devotion.)

There is a popular quote that goes like this “Life is a song. Love is the music” and who is the author?  Who knows? The author remains a mystery, yet something about this quote seems to resonate with many people (pardon the pun). There is something very special about the idea of seeing our lives as part of a love song and this is precisely what God has done for us.

The steadfast love of the Lord goes out into the world to make its way to us and to reside in us. God commands this to happen whether we ask for it or not – it is a song of love unknown that remains with us; giving us that blessed assurance that this love will guard us through the night to wake us with the morning light.

This is a prayer to the God of my life and the lives of my children who were taught every night to pray: “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray thee Lord my Soul to keep, Thy love guard me through the night, and wake me with the morning light.”  In this prayer, even the loveless are lovely in God’s sight and in His sight love that was once unknown is now revealed through Jesus, Who took upon Himself frail flesh to show the whole world the extent and power of such love in humble obedience and selfless sacrifice!

Prayer

Lord God, Your steadfast love reaches out to all people yet You remain unknown to so many who refuse to acknowledge You. Help us to serve as witnesses to the true source of love that may become their song and prayer to You for life. May our songs of praise reveal Your love in our lives in Jesus’ name, Amen.
